In the territory of southwestern Europe (known as SUDOE), many rural areas are facing serious problems: the population is aging and depopulation is increasing, especially in regions such as Castilla y León (Spain), Beira Baixa (Portugal) and the French Basque Country. These areas, marked by this low population density, thus face progressive social and economic deterioration.
The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the great shortcomings that these places have, especially in health services and care for the elderly or dependent people. Additionally, young people and qualified professionals often leave for cities in search of better opportunities, leaving these communities even more weakened.
REVITAL is a project that seeks to change this reality. Its objective is to revitalize the rural areas of SUDOE by combining innovation and local development. To this end, it proposes creating advanced health care and physical and neurological rehabilitation services, especially for elderly and dependent people. How will we do it? Using innovative technologies for telecare and telerehabilitation that allow these services to be offered remotely and efficiently.
In addition to improving the quality of life of people living in these areas, REVITAL also wants to generate qualified employment, attract new inhabitants and boost the rural economy. Thus, the aim is to prevent the elderly from having to move to urban areas to receive advanced medical care and, at the same time, promote sustainable development in these rural areas based on social innovation.
In summary, REVITAL is committed to a future where rural areas not only survive, but thrive, creating stronger, more cohesive communities with better opportunities for all.
